For those who are interested in looking under the hood of Wiccle Web Builder, please don't forget the debug terminal available by adding &debug=on at the end of any page's URL. One useful aspect to be gleaned from the data there are the contents and call locations of all MySQL queries of the page.

With another step towards optimizing the system, I have extended the debug terminal data to include interval timestaps to each MySQL query to see where the system takes longer to process — those are the places that need to be optimized. Here is a screenshot of the microtime extension that will be available with the next version upgrade, taken from the media portal page of our online demo.

The format of the debug data following the query is as follows:

1. Class::function from which the MySQL query was called.
2. Line @ Filename where the function calling the MySQL query was called.
3. Time from script start to query in microseconds.
(Note that template processing happens.after the query, so time spent processing that hop is the offset of this time to the time of the following entry.)

For those interested what's actually happening above, here are the queries in order of apperance.

Get requested layout data, based on $_GET['show'] in the page URL (0.006 sec)
Get columns and units for the requested layout (0.013 sec)
This is the redundant duplicate query I still haven't snipped out. (0.013 sec)
Get 10 posts from the Video module (0.032 seconds)
Get 10 posts from the Gallery module (0.084 seconds)
Get 10 posts from the Audio module (0.155 seconds)
Get 10 posts from the Downloads module (0.167 seconds)
Increment layout view counter (0.199 seconds)

And then the page processing from live data to templates and HTML output stops at exactly 0.200 seconds, memory usage 2048 KB, peak memory usage 2304 KB.

The main increase in possible processing time comes from dynamic data that's parsed into templates. The specific CPU usage depends on the amount of posts (or other dynamic content) fetched, and the template snipped used as the data format (more tags = more processing).

The above represents a good overall system resource imprint reference point, based on which you can make your own performance tests and experiments with different content combinations and template formats.

If you happen to keep debugging on and want to pitch in to make iWiccle/Wiccle a little bit faster still, you can keep your system in debug logging mode whenever you're editing around, and report to us if you see a CPU time spike anywhere in the logs.

If you're a developer and want to track your performance in batches, you can also edit variables.php and flip the following switch on:

$core['sys']['page_history_tracking'] = 0; // tracks page history and performance -> may cause a rapidly growing database table!

And really, if you're a responsible developer, it's practically your duty to keep an eye on system performance, and monitor the effects of the modifications you work on. Since you are now doing it, please also let us know if you spot something consistently lagging.

In Wiccle Web Builder 1.0, thumbnails for certain module feeds (such as Store in eCommerce Portal) are not correctly displayed in small size format.

The Store module uses a larger default thumbnail size (80px) than most other modules (where 60px is the default).T his results in a broken image when content is drawn from one module (Store) into another (Site).

In cross-module use, instead of considering the source module's configuration, the core currently uses the configuration of the parent module for image sizes and the such. This issue is on my list of core fixes to apply as soon as possible. (Currently templates and language files are properly "enveloped" between modules, and config is the last remaining hurdle to cross between full cross-module content mixing.)

Until the core improvement is rolled out, there is a simple fix to the issue. Simply place the following into an empty .htaccess file and upload it to /uploads/store/thumbs folder.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^s60_(.*)$ s80_$1

You can also download a ready .htaccess file (click here) if you wish, and upload it into place. Note that this will only work on webservers running Apache with mod_rewrite on (which should be the case with most respectable hosting servers).

If it is on, it is first of all a general security liability, and second, it can cause a number of problems with software coded for register_globals off --- such as the all the odd issues that arose after the recent security patch. Please turn register_globals off in your php.ini file, or ask your host to do it.

You should not use software that requires you to keep register_globals on. It has been deprecated since PHP 5.3.0, and will be entirely removed in PHP 6.0.0. To know if register_globals is on on your server, download the phpinfo script and upload it to your server, then open it in your browser and search for register_globals in the output; it will be "On" or "Off". If it's on, do whatever it takes to turn it off.

This is how you verify whether it's on or off:

It is best to turn this directive off in your actual php.ini file. If you cannot do that, you can add the following directive into your .htaccess file:

php_flag register_globals off

Depending on your host, the following may also work / be the preferred directive:

php_value register_globals 0

You may also be able to upload a php.ini file with the right directive into your root public_html folder --- but not all hosts support either of these overrides.

If you or your hosting provider are unable to turn register_globals off, you can fix the issue by sticking any one of the alternative solutions at PHP.Net (linked above) into the beginning of your index.php file --- right after session_start(). (This is not officially supported however.)

Shared-Hosting Packages
PHP 5.1.x (5.2.x recommended) or higher
(with GD1/GD2 image library enabled)
MySQL 5.x database server
Apache 1.3 or 2.x (IIS/others with limited support)
VPS Hosting Packages
Video Conversion requires ability to run executable files on the server. (One of three video sharing modes.)
Chat Module also works on shared hosting, but may not be allowed in your hosting company's terms of use.
The only critical setting you need to be able to change is the PHP value to OFF on register_globals
If you use the Gallery module or allow image uploading, your PHP memory settings and hosting plan RAM limits / PHP upload size limits may prevent images above a certain size to be uploaded. This factor is independent of our software, and the amount of memory used is directly tied with PHP image processing classes. To take advantage of Wiccle Web Builder, you should have at a minimum a basic understanding of:

Creating Databases, and backing up / restoring databases.
Working with, and transferring files to a remote host
Manipulating permissions on remote hosts
A basic understanding of HTML and CSS
Diagnosing errors:
From time to time, with different hosts, problems do occur in any online application. When working with these, you need a basic understanding of how they work, and how to diagnose some problems, so that you can assist the support personnel, or perhaps identify and solve the problem on your own. This includes:

Finding your website error logs and access logs

The ability to understand some of the error messages or access log lines

The ability to find, identify and to some level diagnose Javascript errors
An ability to learn independently, and do some research on your own.

For End-Users

To take advantage of Wiccle Web Builder, you should have at a minimum a basic understanding of:

Drag & Drop with the mouse
Word Processor skills (ie MS Word, Open Office Writer)
Desktop Computer knowledge (folders, files)
Member Admin Skills (ie. Creating or Editing profiles / info on Facebook)

Yes it is. Many of our experienced users find it a simple tool for building many websites. However, that does not mean that there isn't some learning to be done. You will at the least need to learn our vocabulary, explore the package and it's options, play around a bit, and probably do considerable learning. Did you jump right in to HTML and learn how to do professional websites in 30 minutes. Probably not, and CMS packages (including this one) are similar.

However, you can create websites within 30 minutes with our Wizards and all you need to do is to add content. There are a few things you will need to learn but the learning curve and ease of use is unmatched by any other system .. And is still improving! We intend to make it easier, faster and less restrictive until the creation of websites is as seemless as viewing websites.
